The Local Area

The area around Casa al Vento is rich in history, wildlife, and local art and culture (i.e. food, wine, and local festivals and events). The nearest large city is Arezzo. Here art and culture abound. Pierro de Francesco painted the famous fresco, "The Legend of the True Cross", at the Church of St. Francesco in the center of the old town. At the Church of San Dominico you will find the Cimabue crucifix (Cimabue was heir to Giotto).

In September there is "The Joust of the Saraceno".This is an event originating in medieval times. The knights of the four sectors of the city compete on horseback in Piazza Grande for the coveted championship. There is a celebration the night before and an elaborate parade leading into the competition.

Arezzo is not the only point of interest near Casa al Vento. There is Castel Nuovo in nearby Subbiano, the sleepy medievel town of Talla, ancient Poppi with it's fabulous castle, the charming town of Anghiari and neighboring Monterchi, and La Chuisi Della Verna where St. Frances received the stigmata. They each have there own charm and are blessed with beautiful art and architecture. For more information click here

Wine and Hilltown ....... San Gimingnano, Voltera, Greve, Montipulciano, Montalcino, Radda in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti, Castiglion Fiorentino, Cortona, and Gubbio (just to name a few) are easily reached in an hour or less. For more information click here
